Day 18 – No Shave Yoga Event – #yogabeardsunite – First Time for Everything

Day 18 – No Shave Yoga Event – #yogabeardsunite – First Time for Everything
I put a donation box on our front desk at the studio to help raise money for the No Shave Yoga Event. At the end of class this morning I made an announcement to the students about our fundraising class that we are holding this coming Sunday at 12pm. Someone came out and felt inspired to give and she said that it this is the first time that she has ever donated money to a cause. She said she heard me say that every dollar counts and that any expression of compassion you offer through giving could change another persons life. I felt honored that this is the cause that she felt that she is ready to ‘break the ice’ with and give to. Whether we share our time, energy, words of kindness or funds to help others makes no matter. One way we can spread peace and neutralize the chaos of hatred is to share some compassion with others in these interesting times.
No Shave Yoga Event is a group of yoga teachers who have banded together to help spread the word, grow hairy, raise money and inspire health through the practice of yoga. Our fundraising team is called Yoga Beards Unite and we aim to raise at least $1500 by the end of November. Please help us achieve our goal by donating to our team page at https://www.no-shave.org/team/yogabeardsunite. When you post on social media please tag us to show your support and share our/your story to help us in our endeavor. No Shave November is focused on generating discussion about men’s health and raising funds for those diagnosed with cancer. Without the support from the women in our lives we would be left helpless. Lift Up & Pass It On – Day 13 – No Shave Yoga Event – #yogabeardsunite

Day 13 – No Shave Yoga Event – #yogabeardsunite – Lift Up & Pass It On
If someone had told me when I was going through my rebellious teenage years that my Dad and I would be practicing and teaching yoga together in the future I would not have believed them. The beauty of growing older and hopefully wiser is that we begin to appreciate the simple things in life. Yoga has aided me in this endeavor and has helped me greatly in appreciating my family and local community. As we move through the generations we pass along our traits to our loved ones. Sometimes for better or worse this reality becomes known. One way that we can positively affect our current situation is to develop a yoga practice and share with others.
In the tradition of yoga, donating to those in need, is seen as a cornerstone of the practice. Dāna is a Sanskrit and Pali word that connotes the virtue of generosity, charity or giving of alms in the Indian philosophies. Whenever we give, it is essential to not expect anything in return. Yet when we give it is known that it helps to lift the nature of the one who gives.

Give to Receive – Day 12 – No Shave Yoga

Today is is a great day to….donate! I challenge you to take it one step further today and make a donation. What if the act of a simple donation made by you today could play a part in changing the course of history?

According to the American Cancer Society, “Cancer causes 1 in 8 deaths worldwide and is rapidly becoming a global pandemic. If rates don’t change, the global cancer burden is expected to increase to 21.7 million cases and 13 million deaths by 2030.”

In the words of Peace Ambassador and Reggae Legend, Bob Marley, “How could you ever give your more, to receive your less?”

We Get By With a Little Help From Our Friends

Day 10 – No Shave Yoga Event – #yogabeardsunite – We Get By With a Little Help From Our Friends
The vibe in the shala was incredible today. The pranayama circle actually grew in size since last week. The sustained focus required to move through the routine definitely enhances awareness and is a great way to prepare for an asana practice. I think I also am still feeling the positive effects of practicing with David Miliotis here this last weekend. One way or another everybody decided to come to the studio today which made for an amazing, busy and sweaty practice session. I was so excited when Greg Nardi showed up for one more practice here before his journey to Mysore, India next week. When he finished his routine he asked me if I needed his help which totally made my day. What a treat to have him teach here unexpectedly! I think the students were stoked as well to get some great attention and adjustments from him. We were able to wrap it all up at the end with the group chanting and singing the Hanuman Chalisa. Sometimes during the summer things slow down and I will sing it on Tuesdays with just one or two other students in the room. Today brought me tremendous inspiration to have the support and enthusiasm from such a positive group.

Today is Day 10 of our No Shave Yoga Event. We are a third of the way through the month and we are also a third of the way toward achieving our fundraising goal as a team this month. Thank you to everyone who has donated thus far. With your help we are moving closer to achieving our goal to raise funds for those who are in need and help raise awareness of the positive benefits yoga can have within the community. Day 9 – No Shave Yoga Event – #yogabeardsunite – Yoga for Others

Day 9 – No Shave Yoga Event – #yogabeardsunite – Yoga for Others
The progression of yoga practice leads to compassion. It is wonderful that we can move into a healthy lifestyle and feel amazing. It is not enough to only achieve this for ourselves. Yoga leads us toward wanting to help others that are in need. So the the big question that comes up sometimes in yoga circles is, how can an individual practicing postural yoga be possibly benefitting all of humanity? Isn’t the endeavor of cultivating personal strength and flexibility often overexercised and used as fulfillment of our own ego desire? Often times it is. Yet I do hold the faith and belief that we can direct our own achievements on and off the mat toward benefitting those in need.
When we really look deeply into how we can help others, coming up with a good answer is challenging. What we often see is that we can only help by just being as positive and calm ourselves so as to reduce the amount of negative emotion and vibes that we throw out at others. In essence truly the only thing we can do is relax and breath and let this grand universe unfold. I like to think though that not only can we work on ourselves, we can also generate goodwill toward others. During this month we encourage you to do the same thing. Go one step beyond your normal routine. Give of yourself to others. Share your enthusiasm for live. Donate some money to help those that are in need. Take some time for yourself to cultivate a positive mood and outlook. Just point your focus toward engendering some compassion and let the rest unfold. Just let it grow! 🙂
